Dreaming: Jade Note Tidies Your Notes While You Sleep
Key takeaways
- Dreaming is an opt-in Pro / Trial feature that runs Catch Up every night on categories that changed.
- It does nothing on nights without changes, waits on categories you’re still writing in, and sends no notifications. You just open Jade Note in the morning and find things in order.
- You can review and undo the results like any other Catch Up, and it doesn’t use your monthly AI allowance.
Keep using a note app long enough, and at some point you notice that what you’ve written is getting messy. The notes keep piling up, but the connections between them don’t. Category summaries go stale. Unsorted notes accumulate in the Inbox.
Jade Note’s Catch Up exists to hand that tidying to AI. Press the button, and AI rereads the category’s notes, updates its wiki, and links related notes together. But if you forget to press the button, nothing gets organized.
So we decided to get the organizing done overnight. Meet Dreaming.
Writing is fun. Tidying is a chore.
Jotting down an idea is enjoyable in itself. Sorting what you wrote, rewriting summaries, and linking related notes, on the other hand, always gets put off.
That isn’t a lack of willpower. Organizing is the kind of work that never hurts to skip today. The cost shows up weeks later, when you go looking for an old note, or when you try to give an AI the context of what you’ve been thinking.
Jade Note has always been built around a simple split: humans write, AI tidies. Catch Up turned that split into a feature, but one piece still sat on the human side: remembering to start the tidying.
People sort their memories while they sleep
The human brain is thought to process the day’s experiences during sleep and consolidate them into memory. Fragments picked up while awake get tied to what you already know overnight. Most of us have had the experience of waking up to find that something that felt scattered yesterday makes a little more sense.
That’s where the name Dreaming comes from. During the day, you write whatever comes to mind. Overnight, Jade Note connects it to your existing notes and shapes it into your category’s knowledge. When you open it in the morning, what you wrote yesterday is already part of the category.
What Dreaming does
Once you turn Dreaming on, Jade Note wakes up once each night, sometime between late night and morning in your time zone, and runs Catch Up on the categories that changed since they were last organized. It does exactly what a manual Catch Up does.
- Updates the category wiki: reads the notes added or edited in the category and rewrites its summary and knowledge to reflect the latest state
- Links related notes: finds notes with similar content and connects them
- Moves notes out of the Inbox: files notes you left unsorted into the category where they belong
To borrow from Karpathy’s “LLM Wiki”, Dreaming runs the “knowledge compilation” step automatically every night. Each note you write helps your category, which is effectively a wiki, grow a little more.
Designed to stay quiet
The thing we cared about most when designing Dreaming was staying quiet. A feature that runs on its own in the middle of the night is convenient, but it also risks the unease of things changing behind your back, and the annoyance of notifications.
On nights with no changes, it does nothing. Categories whose notes haven’t changed since they were last organized are skipped. If nothing changed anywhere, the night ends without a single AI call.
It waits on categories you’re still writing in. If you were just editing a category, Dreaming leaves it alone that night and organizes it on a later night. AI won’t tidy up a thought you’re still in the middle of writing.
It sends no notifications. No “we organized your notes” email, no push notification. You open Jade Note in the morning, and things are in order. That’s it. You don’t need to think about when it ran.
It starts where the most changed. There’s a limit on how many categories Dreaming organizes in one night, and it works through the ones with the most changes first. Anything it doesn’t get to carries over to the next night.
Why you can trust it
Review and undo it like any other Catch Up
Dreaming’s changes are recorded the same way as a manual Catch Up. Open a category’s detail screen to see what changed, and if you don’t like it, use Undo within the undo window to revert it.
It doesn’t use your monthly AI allowance
Organizing done by Dreaming doesn’t count against your monthly AI allowance. You’ll never find that background automation has used up the allowance you wanted for yourself.
Nothing runs unless you turn it on
Dreaming is off by default. Only the notes of people who turn it on get organized overnight, and you can switch it back off at any time.
Getting started
- Open Jade Note and go to the Triggers screen
- Turn on the switch on the Dreaming card at the top of the list
That’s all. Then just keep writing as usual.
Dreaming is available on the Pro plan and the Pro Trial. When you want things organized right away, you can still run Catch Up manually from a category’s detail screen, as before. You can also keep calling Catch Up from ChatGPT or Claude over MCP.
You write. Jade Note tidies overnight.
Notes are at their messiest the moment you write them, and tidying that mess is always a little bit of a chore.
Dreaming takes on that chore overnight. All you do is write down what comes to mind. By morning, yesterday’s notes are already part of their categories, ready to be read as well-organized context the next time you talk to an AI.
